Star Wars Episode IX Is Titled ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ — With First Trailer Released

The wait is over for the first trailer for the final installment of the Skywalker saga. The ninth and final episode of the original Star Wars story is officially titled Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, and the first trailer came along with the title reveal. Be warned, a major surprise is dropped at the end of the trailer, so don’t watch if you want to go into the movie without any knowledge of the potential storyline (though you’ll probably hear about this surprise before the movie is out in December).

In case you missed it, the surprise, which is gleaned by his trademark laugh, is that Emperor Palpatine—who was supposedly killed by Darth Vader at the end of the original Star Wars trilogy—is apparently alive. Especially for many longtime Star Wars fans that were upset with how Rian Johnson handled The Last Jedi (which was a great number of people), the return of the Emperor should be a welcome sight after Supreme Leader Snoke was unceremoniously killed off.

Other highlights of the trailer include Kylo Ren in action, and an emotional embrace between Rey and Princess Leia (played by the departed Carrie Fisher).

More trailers and the release of posters to promote the movie will likely dive deeper into the return of Emperor Palpatine, but we’ll see. But for now, it definitely gives fans something to get very excited about as the most evil person in the galaxy gets back in the mix to conclude the saga.

Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20, 2019.
